Question

What is genetic manipulation? How is it useful in agricultural practices?

Answer

Genetic manipulation is the technique of transfer of a gene from one organism to another using a particular technique. The gene should have a desirable character.

This is done for production of varieties with desirable characteristics like profuse branching in fodder crops, high yielding varieties in maize, wheat , etc.

For example: sugar cane, a plant which can grow in Northern part of India having good yield production having thick stems, but there is a variety of crop of the same genus which can’t give good production in the southern part due to thin stems. So the gene having a thick stem trait is taken from the plant growing in the northern part and incorporated into the southern part sugarcane.
